Here's a guide to some of the terms used on our website:

Bandwidth

The amount of data transferred while viewing web pages or sending emails

Code

The scripted programming language used to develop web pages, which is then interpreted by internet browsers and displayed as a website

Contact form

A form within a page that helps people contact you by specifying fields of required information, e.g. name and company, and sends this to you

Content

The text and images of your website, as distinct from function and page layout

Control panel

An online area which allows you to perform tasks such as managing email accounts or viewing visitor statistics

Disk space

The amount of space or memory on your hosting, for example if your images are 1mb each and your space is 100mb you would be limited to storing 100 images within your site

Domain, domain name

The unique URL for your website and emails, e.g. www.weebo.co.uk, which tells internet service providers where your site is hosted

Download

This usually refers to a file - such as a Word document or PDF - that users can download to their computer

FTP

File transfer protocol is the means of direct access to site files and folders within your hosting account, so that they can be edited 'behind the scenes'

Global domain

A domain not related to a specific country, for example.com,.org, etc.

Google map

A tailored map of your location which is provided free by Google

Hosting

The space on a computer which stores your website files and handles emails

Images

Photos, illustrations and other graphic files on your website

Internet

The collective term for all public communication between computers, including websites and email

Internet browser, browser

An application, such as Internet Explorer, which displays websites

ISP, internet service provider

The company providing your internet connection, for example BT Broadband

MB

One megabytes is 1024 ‘kilobytes’, which are units representing the space taken up by data

Program

The process of developing code

Search engine

A website such as Google which allows you to search for a specific term, and provides a list of relevant results.

Sitemap

A list of all the pages of your website including links to help users and search engines find their way around

Structure

The relation of pages to each other within a website, normally presented in a sitemap

UK domain

A domain specific to the UK, for example.co.uk,.org.uk

Visitor statistics

Information about who has visited your website including total visitors, pages viewed, how they found your site, etc.

Web

'The web' is a collective term referring to all public websites

Web page

An individual page within a website, such as 'home' or 'contact'

Website

A collection of pages and other information within a single domain name
