Six tips before you start writing

1. Look around

Take some time to look at the websites of your competitors and other businesses like yours. Think about why you need a website and what you want to achieve.

2. Don’t worry

Just because you’re not a professional writer doesn’t mean you can’t write good website text. Remember that you know your business and customers better than anyone, and you talk about your products or services all the time. You don’t need to use long, clever words or flowery language - just be clear and honest.

3. Plan your website

Think about what each page needs to say – the points you want people to remember, and any images or customer testimonials that may help. Our tip: leave the home page until last – you’ll have a better idea of what’s most important and where to direct people.

4. Think like a customer

It’s easy to write detailed descriptions of what you do or what’s good about your products, but is your customer interested? Talk about benefits rather than features, how you can help and the specific reasons people should choose you.

5. Keep it short

People on your website will move quickly between pages and scan the text for what they need. Keep your text short and useful, and use paragraph headings and bold text to highlight what matters most. Re-read and edit your content, and get someone else to check it too.

6. Use our page-by-page guide

If you’re struggling to think of what to write, we’ve listed the typical pages of a marketing website and some questions that should help, starting on the next page. Use as many or few pages as you need for your business.
